Visiting? A guitarist's guide to Ottawa

As Canada's capital and its fourth-largest city, Ottawa offers a sophisticated backdrop for the Guitar Alla Grande Festival. Situated at the confluence of three rivers and home to national institutions, it is a city rich in history, culture, and a distinct bilingual character, providing an engaging destination for classical guitar enthusiasts.

Getting there

The most convenient entry point is Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW), located approximately 10.2 km south of downtown Ottawa. From the airport, various ground transport options are available to reach the city center. Once in Ottawa, many of the central attractions and festival venues are walkable, particularly within areas like the ByWard Market. The city is also well-served by public transit, allowing for easy navigation without a car.

Where to stay

To make the most of your visit, consider lodging in the central urban area, sometimes referred to as "Old Ottawa." Popular choices include hotels near Parliament Hill, offering proximity to national landmarks, or in the lively ByWard Market area, known for its restaurants and nightlife. Staying in these areas ensures easy access to festival events and many of the city's attractions by foot, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the capital's atmosphere.

What you'll hear

The Guitar Alla Grande Festival brings together guitarists and enthusiasts for a series of performances, masterclasses, and workshops, celebrating the instrument's diverse repertoire. Attendees can expect to hear a range of musical styles and witness the artistry of talented performers in an engaging and supportive environment. It's an ideal setting for both seasoned players and admirers of the classical guitar to deepen their appreciation.

Beyond the festival, Ottawa's identity as Canada's capital ensures a vibrant cultural scene. The city is home to significant institutions like the National Arts Centre and the National Gallery of Canada, which regularly host a variety of musical and artistic events. This rich cultural tapestry enriches the overall experience, providing opportunities to explore different facets of the arts during your stay.

The local table

Ottawa's culinary scene reflects its diverse population and position as a capital city. The ByWard Market, historically a center of trade, remains a bustling hub for dining, offering a wide array of options from casual bistros to fine dining establishments. You will find everything from international cuisine to contemporary Canadian fare. Given the lack of a distinct, grounded local dish in the sources, the best approach is to explore the variety, perhaps enjoying a meal at one of the many restaurants in the market or sampling dishes influenced by both English and French Canadian culinary traditions.

While you're there

Between festival events, Ottawa offers a wealth of attractions. A visit to Parliament Hill is essential, as are explorations of Canada's national museums, including the National Gallery, the Canadian Museum of History (located just across the Ottawa River in Gatineau, Quebec), and the Canadian War Museum. The Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a prominent feature, offering scenic walks along its banks. The ByWard Market, beyond its dining, is a historic public market with shops and entertainment. For a different perspective, consider a short trip across the Ottawa River to Gatineau, Quebec, to experience its predominantly French-speaking culture and explore its own attractions, such as the Canadian Museum of History. Ottawa's many parks and green spaces also provide opportunities for relaxation and outdoor enjoyment.
