Visiting? A guitarist's guide to Louisville

Louisville, Kentucky's largest city, sits at the confluence of Southern and Midwestern cultures, offering a lively and welcoming setting for the annual University of Louisville Guitar Festival and Competition. Known as the "Gateway to the South," the city combines Southern hospitality with a vibrant arts scene, excellent dining, and ample opportunities for bourbon tasting. For a classical guitar enthusiast, attending the festival in this dynamic city pairs its concerts with a chance to explore a uniquely American destination rich in history and charm.

Getting there

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) serves as the primary gateway, with direct flights from major American airline hubs including Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, and New York. The airport is compact and easy to navigate, featuring a single terminal. Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is another option, located about 1.5 hours away by car. For those traveling by road, Louisville is well-connected by Interstates I-65, I-64, and I-71, making it accessible from various parts of the country. Once in the city, downtown, Old Louisville, the Highlands, and Frankfort Avenue are walkable, and public bus service connects these areas; however, a car is generally recommended for exploring beyond these central districts.
