Visiting? A guitarist's guide to St Andrews

For classical guitar enthusiasts, the annual Classical Guitar Retreat Scotland offers an immersive experience in one of Scotland's most historic and picturesque towns. St Andrews, famed for its ancient university and as the 'home of golf,' provides a unique backdrop for a week dedicated to the instrument. Here, the pursuit of musical excellence blends with the charm of a coastal burgh, offering a holiday rich in both culture and melody.

Getting there

Edinburgh Airport (EDI) offers the best range of flights for international arrivals. From there, take the Stagecoach Bus Jet 747 across the Forth to Inverkeithing for an hourly train connection to Leuchars, or to Halbeath for an hourly bus. Alternatively, a tram or bus from Edinburgh Airport to Edinburgh Haymarket connects to further trains or buses. Glasgow Airport (GLA) is another option with a good selection of flights. For a closer, though more limited, option, Dundee Airport (DND) has flights from London Stansted by Loganair, twice daily on weekdays and once on Sundays; from April to October, it also flies from London City (LCY) and Belfast City (BHD).

The nearest train station is Leuchars, about six miles west of St Andrews. Trains run twice an hour from Edinburgh, taking about an hour via Inverkeithing and Kirkcaldy, and continue north to Dundee and beyond. From London King's Cross, there are two direct daytime trains to Aberdeen that call at Leuchars, or you can change in Edinburgh. The overnight Highland Sleeper from London Euston also stops at Leuchars before 6 AM. From Glasgow Queen Street, change at either Edinburgh Haymarket or Dundee; the journey takes about 1 hour 50 minutes. From Leuchars station, Stagecoach Bus 99 runs every ten minutes during the daytime to St Andrews, taking about ten minutes. A combined train and bus ticket to 'St Andrews Bus' is often cheaper than separate fares. A taxi from Leuchars to the town centre costs approximately £20.

Direct buses also serve St Andrews. Bus X59 runs hourly from Edinburgh St Andrew Square, taking just over two hours via Halbeath and Glenrothes, with the last bus at 5:50 PM. Bus X24 runs hourly from Glasgow Buchanan station, taking about three and a half hours via Cumbernauld, Dunfermline, Halbeath, and Glenrothes, with the last bus at 6:20 PM. The central St Andrews Bus Station is on City Road.

Where to stay

St Andrews offers a variety of accommodation options, from historic hotels to guesthouses and university residences. Staying within or near the town's compact centre allows easy walking access to the university buildings, the historic sites, and the retreat venues. Consider areas around North Street, Market Street, or South Street for proximity to shops, restaurants, and the ancient heart of town. Given St Andrews' popularity, especially during summer events and major golf tournaments, booking your accommodation well in advance is advisable to secure your preferred choice.

What you'll hear

The Classical Guitar Retreat Scotland is designed as an immersive week for guitarists, focusing on masterclasses, workshops, and concerts rather than a competitive format. Participants and attendees can expect to hear a wide range of classical guitar repertoire performed by both faculty and students, encompassing various styles and periods. The retreat fosters a collaborative and educational environment, making it an excellent opportunity to deepen your appreciation for the instrument and its music in a focused setting.

Hearing the intricate sounds of the classical guitar within the ancient stone walls and historic settings of St Andrews offers a unique auditory experience. The town, with its medieval cathedral ruins, venerable university quads, and coastal breezes, provides a serene and inspiring backdrop for musical study and performance. While there is no specific classical guitar composer tied historically to St Andrews, the atmosphere of learning and shared musical passion in such a significant Scottish cultural centre creates its own resonant heritage for the week.

The local table

St Andrews, being a coastal Scottish town, offers excellent opportunities to enjoy local seafood. Look for freshly caught fish, often served simply with chips or prepared more elaborately in local restaurants. Traditional Scottish fare, such as Cullen Skink, a creamy smoked haddock soup, is a comforting choice, particularly on a cooler evening. For a more casual meal, local bakeries often feature traditional Scottish shortbread and other baked goods. Dining experiences range from traditional pubs serving hearty meals to more upscale restaurants, many of which are clustered around Market Street and South Street. Given Scotland's reputation for whisky, a dram of local single malt is an appropriate way to conclude an evening.

While you're there

Beyond the retreat's musical schedule, St Andrews offers a wealth of history and activities. Explore the dramatic ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, once Scotland's largest and most important church, and climb St Rule's Tower for panoramic views. Adjacent to the cathedral are the remains of St Andrews Castle, clinging to the cliffs overlooking the sea, with its infamous 'bottle dungeon' and mine and countermine. Wander through the ancient quadrangles of the University of St Andrews, particularly St Salvator's Quad, where students in their traditional red gowns add a splash of colour on Sundays. For golf enthusiasts, a pilgrimage to the Old Course, the 'home of golf,' is essential, even if just to walk part of the course or visit the R&A World Golf Museum.

The Martyrs Memorial, commemorating the Reformation martyrs, stands prominently on a cliff overlooking the sea. For a change of pace, visit the St Andrews Botanic Garden or the St Andrews Aquarium. The town itself is highly walkable, with its charming streets, independent shops, and cafes. For a scenic day trip, take Bus 95 south along the coast to explore the picturesque fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife, such as Kingsbarns, Crail, Anstruther, and Pittenweem, each with its unique harbour and charm. Dundee, just ten miles north, offers museums and galleries, while Scotland's vibrant capital, Edinburgh, is about an hour and a half away by train, making it a feasible, albeit longer, day excursion or a perfect addition to your trip before or after the retreat.
