For a classical-guitar enthusiast, the Concorso Riviera Etrusca offers a compelling reason to visit Piombino, a historic port town nestled on the border of the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas in southern Tuscany. The competition draws promising talent to a region celebrated for its ancient history and stunning coastal landscapes. Attending the event places you in a vibrant setting where musical artistry meets the deep cultural tapestry of Italy.
Getting there
Piombino is situated in the province of Livorno, southern Tuscany. The most convenient airports for arrival are Pisa Galileo Galilei (PSA) and Florence Amerigo Vespucci (FLR). From Pisa airport, take a short train ride to Pisa Centrale, then connect to a regional train heading south towards Piombino Centrale; this journey typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. From Florence, travel to Florence Santa Maria Novella station, then take a train to Piombino, often with a change in Pisa, making the total travel time around 2.5 to 3 hours. Once in Piombino, the town center and competition venues are generally walkable, and the port offers regular ferry services to Elba Island.

Where to stay
Base yourself in Piombino's ancient historical centre, the casco antiguo, to be within easy reach of the competition venues and the town's charming streets. This area, with its medieval origins and Pisan influences, provides a picturesque setting for exploring on foot. Accommodations range from boutique hotels to guesthouses, many offering views of the sea or the historic architecture. Staying near the waterfront also places you close to the bustling port, a hub for local life and a gateway to the Tuscan archipelago.
What you'll hear
The Concorso Riviera Etrusca is a classical guitar competition held on the Tuscan coast. It offers a first prize including cash and concert engagements, attracting skilled young guitarists. The competition's repertoire varies, and interested attendees should consult the official website for specific program details. Notably, the competition does not feature a concerto round.
While Piombino does not have a specific composer tied to its history in the same way some cities do, the Concorso Riviera Etrusca takes place within the broader context of Italy's immense musical and artistic heritage. Tuscany, the birthplace of the Renaissance, has fostered centuries of creative expression across various art forms. The setting itself, a historic town on the Etruscan coast, provides a rich cultural backdrop that subtly informs the musical experience, connecting contemporary performance to a timeless tradition of art and culture.
The local table
As a coastal town in Tuscany, Piombino's culinary scene is rich in fresh seafood from the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas. Look for specialties such as *cacciucco*, a robust fish stew that originates from nearby Livorno, or simply prepared grilled fish and shellfish. The surrounding Maremma region also influences local menus, offering hearty inland dishes like wild boar (*cinghiale*) often served with pasta or polenta. Traditional Maremman soups, such as *acquacotta*, a rustic vegetable and bread soup, also feature prominently. Accompany your meal with a glass of local Tuscan wine, perhaps a crisp Vermentino from the coast or a Morellino di Scansano from the Maremma hills.

While you're there
Piombino's ancient historical centre is worth exploring, with its medieval channels and the Castle of Piombino, a reminder of its past as an independent lordship. A short trip inland takes you to Populonia, a *frazione* of Piombino, which was the main Etruscan city in the area and offers significant archaeological sites and stunning views over the Gulf of Baratti. The port itself is a lively spot, offering ferry connections to Elba Island, an excellent day trip destination known for its beautiful beaches and Napoleonic history. For nature enthusiasts, the northern side of Maremma, a vast natural region, is close by, offering opportunities for hiking and exploring the Tuscan countryside.
