Visiting? A guitarist's guide to Rotenburg

The annual Rotenberger Gitarrenwoche draws classical guitar enthusiasts to Rotenburg, Germany, for a week of performances, masterclasses, and competition. This gathering offers a focused environment for celebrating the instrument, set within a German town.

Getting there

The festival's home is Rotenburg an der Wümme, on the railway between Bremen and Hamburg, so either city's airport works with a regional train onward. Accommodation is partly arranged in the neighbouring village of Ahausen, which makes a car useful for the last stretch.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Rotenburg will likely include a selection of guesthouses and smaller hotels. Given the nature of the event, booking in advance is advisable to ensure availability, especially during the festival week. Staying within the town allows easy access to the event venues and local amenities.

What you'll hear

The Rotenberger Gitarrenwoche features a competition attracting aspiring classical guitarists. Beyond the competitive rounds, the 'Gitarrenwoche' or 'Guitar Week' format suggests a program rich in concerts and educational opportunities, offering attendees a chance to hear a wide range of repertoire and styles performed by international talents.

While no specific classical guitar composer is historically tied to Rotenburg, the festival itself becomes a focal point for the instrument's contemporary voice. The event creates its own musical atmosphere, bringing a diverse array of guitar music to the town each year. This provides a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in modern classical guitar performance within a local German setting.

The local table

German cuisine is diverse, and visitors to Rotenburg can expect to find local eateries serving regional specialities. Common offerings across Germany include hearty dishes, often featuring pork, potatoes, and various sausages, along with local breads and pastries. Look for establishments offering traditional fare for an authentic taste of the region.
