Each July, the ancient city of Córdoba becomes a global hub for guitar, hosting the Festival de la Guitarra de Córdoba. This annual event draws musicians and enthusiasts from around the world for a program rich in masterclasses, concerts, and cultural immersion. Set in one of Andalusia's most historically resonant cities, the festival offers a unique opportunity to experience the instrument's vibrancy against a backdrop of Moorish architecture and Spanish tradition.

Getting there

Córdoba is exceptionally well-connected by Spain's high-speed rail network. The most convenient international airports are Madrid (MAD), Seville (SVQ), and Málaga (AGP). From Madrid, AVE trains reach Córdoba in under two hours, while from Seville, the journey is a swift 45 minutes. From Málaga, trains take about an hour. The city's central train station is a short walk or taxi ride from the historic core, making arrival smooth and easy.

Where to stay

For convenience to festival venues and the city's main attractions, consider staying within or near the historic Judería (Jewish Quarter) or the surrounding old town. This area places you within walking distance of the Mezquita-Cathedral, the Alcázar, and many charming squares. Córdoba offers a range of accommodation, from boutique hotels in converted historic houses to larger establishments, all providing a comfortable base for exploring the city between concerts. Booking ahead is advisable, especially during the festival period.

The Festival de la Guitarra de Córdoba is a celebration of the instrument's diversity, featuring masterclasses with renowned artists and a full schedule of concerts spanning classical, flamenco, and other genres. Unlike a competition with a single prize winner, the festival emphasizes learning, collaboration, and performance, offering attendees the chance to hear a wide array of guitar music in intimate and grand settings.

Córdoba itself resonates with musical connections. The celebrated Cuban composer, conductor, and guitarist Leo Brouwer, a towering figure in contemporary guitar music, notably directed the Orquesta de Córdoba, linking him directly to the city's musical institutions. Furthermore, the city is immortalized in Isaac Albéniz's piano suite España, with a movement simply titled 'Córdoba.' Although Albéniz never wrote directly for the guitar, his works, including many pieces evoking Spanish places like 'Sevilla,' 'Granada,' 'Málaga,' and 'Ronda,' are cornerstones of the classical guitar repertoire through countless transcriptions, making his spirit ever-present in this Andalusian setting.

The local table

Córdoba's cuisine is deeply rooted in Andalusian tradition, with influences from its Moorish past. The essential local dish is salmorejo, a rich, thick cold tomato soup, distinct from gazpacho. Other must-try specialties include flamenquín, a fried roll of pork loin, ham, and cheese; and rabo de toro, slow-cooked oxtail stew. Seek out a traditional taberna in the Judería for authentic flavors, and do not miss the chance to try local Montilla-Moriles wines, often served chilled.

While you're there

Beyond the festival, Córdoba offers a wealth of historical and cultural sights. The Mezquita-Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a breathtaking fusion of mosque and cathedral, a testament to centuries of changing rule. Explore the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, with its magnificent gardens, and wander through the labyrinthine streets of the Judería, discovering hidden patios brimming with flowers. A visit to the Viana Palace with its twelve distinct patios is also a highlight. For day trips, the high-speed rail network puts other Andalusian gems within easy reach: Seville, with its grand cathedral and Alcázar, about forty-five minutes away, and Granada, home to the Alhambra palace. Ronda, dramatically perched above its deep gorge, is a longer haul by road or the slow, scenic mountain railway, but rewards the effort. All are cities evoked in the music of Albéniz.
